At the beginning of the 2008 spring semester a program was launched to help alleviate the burden of student loans for Maine's workforce. Opportunity Maine was created thanks to a legislative initiative that was approved last year. The program will allow college graduates who incur education loan debt dating from January of 2008 to be able to claim a tax credit for loan repayments.
Rob Brown, Executive Director of Opportunity Maine, has been working with high schools and colleges across the state to spread the word about this new program. Public service announcements ran in the spring and will be running again this fall highlighting the benefits of the program.
To be eligible for the tax credit, the graduate must live and pay income tax in Maine. In addition to residents, those from out of state who attend and graduate public or private college in Maine and then get a job here are eligible.
